A STRANGER IN TOWN (Part 2) About MGB - Metro Goldwyn Mayer was founded in April 1924 by American business magnate and a pioneer of the motion picture industry Marcus Loew. Loew spearheaded the merger of Metro Pictures Corp., Goldwyn Pictures with Louis B. Mayer Productions. Lewis B. Mayer, film producer, became head of the renamed MGM and production genius Irving Thalberg head of production. Together the duo transformed MGM, replete with its celebrated studio logo–a roaring lion, surrounded by a ring of film inscribed with the studio’s motto–into a legendary icon. Leo the Lion was conceived by Howard Dietz, the studio’s chief publicist in 1916, for Goldwyn Pictures and replaced in 1924 for MGM’s use.
