Griffith and released through United Artists, the studio Griffith co-founded with Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, and Douglas Fairbanks . The screenplay was written by Griffith himself, based on the short story "Black Beach" by Ralph Stock . The film stars Richard Barthelmess (who had previously appeared in Griffith's Broken Blossoms and would later receive an Academy Award nomination for The Patent Leather Kid), Carol Dempster (a frequent Griffith collaborator), and George MacQuarrie. Cinematography was handled by Griffith's legendary cameraman G.W. "Billy" Bitzer, along with Paul H. Allen . The running time is approximately 70 minutes (7 reels) .
